Putting aside the fact that your claim of an 8 foot wave is likely bogus (the size of the wave is proportional to the vessel's displacement and that would require a reallybig police boat)... It is a common trait of any vessel. The higher the initial stability, the more sensitive to waves if the size of the waves is a significant proportion of the vessel's size. John Winters has shown that a kayak or canoe with high stability is very likely to upset on a breaking wave, while a low-stability boat is much less likely. Since you were in a kayak with high stability, there was not much you could do about the upset. That's why experienced kayakers prefer kayaks with low initial stability. You clearly don't know enough to place the blame correctly. Lane? Were there lines marked on the water? If the power boat is in open water, you have the right of way. If in a channel of a size that restricts their maneuvering, they have the right of way. If they are responding to an emergency, they have the right of way. Which is it? Then you haven't looked very hard. There are lots of other lights out there. I told you what to look for - how about doing the work yourself? You might actually learn something. How do you know they were on patrol? They could have been responding to something. Don't reject the answer just because you don't like it. YOU are responsible. Learn the law instead of complaining about it. Mike
