James M. Smith A recent tv piece in UK announced that examination results were up again - for the nth year in a row. It sounded like another of those Orwellian announcements about how great our gvernment is. (You know the sort of thing: the choco ration has gone *up* from 30 grams per week to 25 grams per week! Yeah! Right. Then the tv presenter offered us three problems; salving the incompetence of us creeking oldies by saying that this was for 14-15 year-olds. One of the problems was solve 5-6 x 3-5. This I could do in my head along with the other two problems offered. Okay! I expect to - I did spend a goodly proportion of my life as an electronics engineer - I expect to wiffitick in my head and quick and right. But what struck me was that this was for 14-15 year-olds who are approaching the end of the their basic education. I could do this when I was eight years old; I was on to decimals by the age of nine; and just because I was interested, I had learned binary by the time I was nine too. Educational standards are plummetting and the examinations are being made as easy as pie to get the kids through and make it look good. Society no longer needs the moderately educated people (like myself) that it needed thirty years ago. The reality is that there are a limited number of jobs for the better educated and raising the level for everyone will not serve any purpose because there simply will not be the jobs when they come to maturity.
