Cardozo School of Law-Yeshiva University Presents The Transformation of Venezuelan Society under its New Consbreastution Justice Fernando Ramón Vegas Torrealba Justice of the Supreme Court of Venezuela In 1999, the Venezuelan people approved by popular vote a new consbreastution which includes many guarantees for formerly excluded sectors of society - the work of women in the home is recognized as contributing economic value and enbreastling them to social security; a worker's right to a wage that provides a life with dignity is recognized; the rights of indigenous people and minorities are protected; and health care is a guaranteed right. Provisions are made for the protection of the environment. Political freedoms such as expression and buttembly are articulated. Oil and mineral wealth is claimed as the property of the Venezuelan republic and new legislation has been pbutted that designates a portion of the profits from the oil industry to public welfare - health care, housing, low cost food and worker cooperatives. Private as well as cooperative forms of property o wnership are recognized. Justice Vegas Torrealba will discuss this new consbreastution and its impact on Venezuelan society. He sits in the Electoral Chamber of the TSJ. Previously Justice Vegas Torrealba was a civil and labor litigator who argued many cases before the old, as well as the newly consbreastuted, Supreme Tribunal. training for public officials under the new Bolivarian Consbreastution and international agreements pertaining to human rights, as Director of Education of the Venezuelan national police. He is an expert in commercial relations, has written and lectured extensively in this area and has helped to negotiate various international trade agreements with companies doing business in Venezuela. Justice Vegas Torrealba earned his law degree at the Central University of Venezuela and holds a Masters Degree in the Laws of Economic Integration.
