New York City cries poverty when it comes to improving public transportation and paying city employees a decent wage, but somehow they always have millions to waste on UNNECESSARY park renovations. TIME FOR A CORRUPTION PROBE! ---------------------------------------------- Washington Square Park Getting Lock & Key From 1010WINS.COM May 10, 2005 (NEW YORK) Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village is due to get a $16 million renovation. But after the work is done, the park will be locked after midnight. It seems like just yesterday that this park was completely rebuilt - it couldn't have been more than 8 years or so ago. It is in good condition and certainly needs no reconstruction now. Could the desire to be able to easily deny the public access to their public park, as well as to shower favored contractors with our tax money, be factors in this? The work involves moving the giant fountain, moving two dog runs, replacing the concrete plaza with grbutt and finally adding a fence around the nine-and-three-quarter acre park - so it can be locked after midnight. The fountain is beautiful right where it is and in good shape. Given its size and weight, moving it will be very costly. Replacing the plaza with grbutt will allow much less space for public use, unless the grbutty areas are open to the public. A surrounding fence is unnecessary, will look ugly, and will enable the unjustified denial of public access. Last Call!
