Melville is pretty close to the Nbuttau-Suffolk border so you could go either way. The houses are cheaper in Suffolk, but the taxes are higher. Some of the older sections of Nbuttau have lower taxes. NYC has the lowest property taxes, but I don't think you'd want to commute from Queens or Brooklyn. Most of the more affluent areas on LI claim to have excellent school districts. The teachers here are very well paid compared to other areas of the country and most schools have good services. Of course we pay through the nose for all this, but that's another discussion. The further east you go, the cheaper the houses are, however your commute will get longer and longer. Don't confuse the names of towns with school districts. Find out what school district the house you're looking at is in. Our local newspaper, Newsday, rates different aspects of the schools from time to time. You might want to check them out on the web to see if you can download any of this info. The prices of houses on LI have gone up considerably in recent years. Practically everything in my neighborhood is up for sale right now, so you'll have good selection, although the house prices are high and taxes are out of control. And don't think your federal return will help you out that much with LI taxes, AMT (alternative minimum tax) is killing many Long Islanders, particularly ones with two incomes.
