As with all areas, NJ has good areas and bad areas. There are some VERY nice areas here, including Somerset County, where I live. The problem is that the nice areas near the city (THE city is NY City; THE bridge is the George Washington Bridge) are extremely expensive, and the farther out areas, which may or may not be less expensive, are probably just too far from work for you. I was not kidding that you could spend 3 or 4 hours each way on some days, and I suspect that those days would not be few.

Of course, lots of people who live in NY shop in NJ. The sales tax is lower (6%) and there's no tax on clothing, a significant savings over NY where the tax is over 8% in many areas and it does apply to clothing. (Shameless plug to increase our tax revenues)

I really don't think that you would necessarily be isolated from the city if you live on Long Island. The Long Island RR provides excellent service to the city 7 days per week if you don't feel like driving. It depends how far east you want to live.

As for Westchester and Connecticut, you have the same problem as NJ, long drives in traffic. It all depends how much you mind fighting traffic There is a ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson, but I don't know how reliable it is in bad weather or if it is a year round service or not. Perhaps someone could fill in the blanks on that.
