Relocating to Long Island 1341

Not a viable option. The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson ferry runs once an hour, takes an hour and fifteen minutes to make the crossing, costs $39 for a car and driver (plus an extra $2 tax from Bridgeport), and leaves you in Port Jefferson which isn't exactly near Melville. There's no reason why anyone choosing a place to live would want to do this.

You should just look for a place to live on Long Island, preferably near Melville or near the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway (N Y 135, an uncongested north-south road).

It depends on the pay being cut. I stand by my statement that a cut from $10MM...

As far as reverse-commuting from NYC by LIRR and driving from the station to Melville, it's not such an easy option either, since parking at most LIRR stations requires living in the town or village that owns the parking lot. Maybe you could find an unrestricted street space a 5- or 10-minute walk from Hicksville or Syosset.

Here's a summary of LIRR-to-Melville buses from when I asked about such a trip a few years back: "I don't know if the site is within walking distance of Route 110 and therefore the S1 bus, but if it is, is the bus reliable? Do the 25-minute trip times compare reasonably well with the same trip by car? Most departures from the Huntington station are about 15 minutes after the train arrives, which is a big waste of time versus driving, and it's even worse in the PM. Amityville isn't much better. What about the N95 or N70 from Farmingdale?"
