Ken Smith What does is matter if you paid for it? You certainly didn't pay for the symbol that it represents. And you ABSOLUTELY have no exclusive claim of ownership of that symbol. If it is really only a piece of cloth that you want to burn, go out and buy a bedsheet and burn that. Why should the media care if some malcontent wants to burn a flag? There's nothing newsworthy about that. If you want to make the event newsworthy, invite some construction workers or other burly patriotic types, and then burn the flag in front of them. It isn't "free speech" -- in fact, it isn't speech at all. It is an ACTION that is akin to "fighting words" -- the desecration of a symbol that is revered by many. Your action is designed to incite others to anger with no consequence to you (because the contemporary political climate discourages others from taking appropriate action). This exposes you as nothing more than an immature brat craving attention. But let's note that it can be VIOLATED. One might ask whom Ken considers to be his "betters in government"? Those who have been found to be psychologically fit to practise law, perhaps? (And I would submit that his perception of them as "betters in government" just might be another indication that the Colorado Bar Examiners must have been on to something when they asked Ken to submit to a pscyhological examination.) -- Theodore A.
