Prop. 2 Ballot Language "The consbreastutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage." I believe most people thought it did what you say, defined marriage. I would even guess (at least I hope) that most people who voted for it thought it said what you say, but if you read past the word "and", it does far more than define marriage. It prohibits civil unions. Most gays I know understand that a "marriage" is a union between a man and a woman. I'm pretty disappointed that this Amendment was written as it was and sold a a "definition of marriage" act. It did far more, and I don't think families benefited one bit by denying civil unions to people who want to couple up, legally. I recommended to a gay close to me that they now try for a "Separate But Equal" amendment, like the schools we had for black people when I was a kid. I'm a Republican and I was pretty disappointed when I saw the actual wording of this proposition. I voted "No". My party is acting like the Democrats did in the 50's and 60's. -----------------------
