Aug. 8, 2005: Adela Dalto, a New York-based Latin jazz vocalist for 25 years, begins working for her son, Oregon State Representative Billy Dalto, R-Salem, as a legislative aide in his Salem office, for $3,500 per month.

Aug. 29, 2005: Adela Dalto files for personal bankruptcy in New York to escape $78,536 in debts. She declares monthly income of $1,400, including $1,000 from her singing career, $100 from music royalties and $300 of support from her son. State Representative Billy Dalto said that probably came from his brother, a music producer.

Aug. 31, 2005: Adela Dalto is issued her first check, of $2,739, for Oregon legislative work performed in August. She later earns $3,500 for September and $3,500 for October, leaving the Salem job Oct. 31.

Feb. 28, 2006: Bankruptcy judge Allan Gropper grants Adela Dalto's request to free her from dischargeable debts. She reportedly had $2,120 in buttets when she filed for bankruptcy and liquidated her $19,000 retirement account the prior year.

Oregon lawmakers get $4,294 per month to spend on staff salaries and supplies during legislative sessions. In concept, that's designed to pay for a legislative aide and a secretary, although lawmakers are free to set their own staffing and pay structures.

In 2004, when there was no session, Dalto normally paid aide Ashlen Anderson $1,000 per month.

In 2005, a legislative year, Dalto normally paid Anderson $2,600 per month. When his mother Adela Dalto filled in from Aug. 8 to Oct. 31, Dalto paid her the equivalent of $3,500 per month.
