SJP You are so screwed up that I think you might actually believe what you're saying. Let's see: fire all these union guys who, even if they go too far sometimes, are incredibly disciplined and well-trained. Hire any yokel who is willing to drive the train for any pay. Yeah, that sounds real promising. The union is sort of like a guild. Whether you believe this free market line of crap or not, we're not just getting trains moving with these people. We're also getting the benefits of experience and safety that comes from qualified people. We also have the right people to see problems with the tracks, and people who are disciplined enough to dispatch the trains properly. Walking-biking say five miles isn't all that feasible - it knocks too much time out of the day, and some people just can't walk or bike. Most... Maybe some of the MTA's positions aren't the hardest in the world, but at least people are getting years of experience and training as they learn a position. And damn, you really don't want people who aren't disciplined at the MTA. Part of the framework that hones that experience is the union, whether you like them or not. They really aren't getting an unfair pay now for the work they're doing, keeping derailments and accidents to a minimum.
