The sales tax, as proposed earlier this year, had rebates for those on the lower economic levels. After someone is making $40K - $50K or so a year (I think it was somewhere around there - don't remember it for sure), they don't need the rebate. People at those levels would get their "rebate" when 20% of their pay, that normally goes to federal tax, goes into their pockets instead.

This is no "liberal" idea - it was proposed by pro-industry people - conservatives. The economy, and especially this drain of jobs away from the US, could be greatly benefited by this change in the tax laws.

And, yes, BTW, it is the government's responsibility to promote prosperity. Do you want a government that stands by and does nothing while foreign workers increase poverty in the USA - especially when it could prevent it? Do you like people being in poverty for lack of work? Is that what you want? Excuse me, but this makes me angry - your position is totally untenable. If the US government doesn't promote the welfare of its citizens, what government will? All those other governments are trying to make their citizens, and therefore their country, richer.

I for one sure as hell won't go for an expansion of a regressive tax like the sales tax. An income...

And no, its not the government's mission to level the playing field for American business and workers, its the government's job to give American business and workers as much advantage over compebreastion as much as it possibly can.

I think you're dreaming - no environmentally-related business will expand unless there are laws requiring the industries who are customers of environmentally-related businesses to clean up their emissions. Foreign countries, many of them, don't have such laws.

And "cleaning them up" would release more pollution than is contained in that layer of sediment. I read about this several years ago. Dredge that stuff, and you dirty the river, big time, by stirring up all kinds of nasty stuff that was deposited over decades, and not just be GE.

Well, that's what this tax law change would do.

That would be good for our industry, but what about making the foreigners start paying for running this country? The workers overseas do not pay US income tax, and neither do the businesses that employ them. A sales tax would start making them pay a fair share for their access to our markets.

As far as anything being better than tax cuts, now you're getting into Democrat Dogma. Tax cuts are always a good idea, at least for those that are taxed. The government that just taxes and taxes and taxes finds ways to spend, spend, spend and much of it is wasted because the supply is so plentiful. The government must be kept on a short leash with respect to money, or we'll end up with the horrendous tax rates of some of the European countries - 70%, stuff like that.
