Consider that since the city has been blanketed with no parking zones, cars (speeding and otherwise) that suddenly go out of control, all to easily mount the 6 inch or so curbs and plunge along the pedestrians spaces. Look at places like Canal street in Manhattan, or 3 Avenue (under the Gowanus) in Brooklyn for the extremes. Where the sidewalks have no protective barrier of parked cars. They took parking away from Columbus Circle, and almost immediately an out of control car, plunged through the window of a restaurant there and end a customer while he was sitting at the counter (back to the window) eating his lunch. If they're going to remove parking from the curbsides, they've got to replace these barriers with stauncheons and-or rails. One should not have to worry, while walking around NYC, about cars coming up on the sidewalks and "accidentally" being end. The chant should be "No Barriers -- NO! No parking!" We've had many accidents where cars get sideswiped, cut off, or the driver has an attack, and the vehicle comes up on the sidewalk, because there's nothing to prevent them from doing so. In these cases many lives have been lost or permanently ruined, families torn apart, reduced to suffering, simply because public safety took a backseat to parking-traffic concerns. Obwon
