Jewish bigs meet Javits Ctr. designer

BY PAUL D. COLFORD DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Javits Center architect Richard Rogers met with state and Jewish leaders yesterday to try to clear the air over his reported ties to an anti-Israel group. Rogers said he supports Israel's security fence, distancing himself from an organization he once belonged to which called for a boycott over the West Bank parbreastion. Critics had questioned having Rogers design the makeover of the Javits Center, named for former U.S. Senator and staunch backer of Israel Jacob Javits.

But yesterday, a top Jewish leader said Rogers clarified his position in closed door talks.

"He was able to add some information about the issues that have risen, including the fact that he was hospitalized and hadn't seen some of the articles I brought to his attention," said Malcolm Hoenlein, executive vice chairman of the influential Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations.

The conference, an umbrella group representing 52 national Jewish organizations, is expected to discuss Rogers' role in the Javits project later this week.

"The resolution of this matter rests with the agency involved," Hoenlein said.

Empire State Development Corp. - through a subsidiary, New York Convention Center Development Corp. - is planning a $1.7 billion expansion of the Javits complex according to Rogers' design.

Rogers had made statements supporting the group Architects and Planners for Justice in Palestine, which is opposed to the security fence and which met last month at his firm's London headquarters.

"The meeting was held on the office premises as a favor to the group's founder, Abe Hayeem, an old friend of mine who is Jewish and who is married to an Israeli," Rogers said.

"I left after 10 minutes," he went on. "They never pbutted a resolution on a boycott against Israel and, if they ever propose one, I will oppose it."

Empire State Development Corp. boss Charles Gargano said through his office that he had "a good discussion" yesterday with Rogers.

In Rogers' latest statement released earlier yesterday, he called on the Islamic group Hamas, now forming a new Palestinian government, "to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist." * ================================================================ NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us ================================================================
