Absolutely and so were the Hebrews and the early Egyptians etc. It was a primitive ironage fertility practise that became incorporated into religions. That story about Abraham was a story pbutted on orally for centuries and common to many mid east peoples not just the Hebrews. When writing was developed people started to write these old stories down along with their own ideas to explain why certain practises existed. In the Abraham story they attributed it to some agreement with God. The same is true with the Sodom and Gomorrah story. These 2 cities and the surroundung area were destroyed 5000 years ago but it was by a purely natural disaster, an underground fire which caused the sulpher deposits to burn and explode into the air which in turn burnt the cities down. But when this was finally recorded on a scroll the author explained it by saying that God destroyed the cities because the people were idolators and homoloveuals and even made up a cute little story about a character named Lot who was allowed to live. It was a way of life as the Bible explained that So did the Hebrews. So if a religion had a custom where they tatooed a kids face and cut off the tip of his nose, because in their mythology their God told them they have to do this, you would respect that. There are all sorts of crazy practises in the world based on supersbreastion and appeasing the gods rituals, circumcision is one of them.
