The SJ Mercury report, which I saw in a printed copy of the newspaper, indicated that Schwartzmiller had 36,000 entries in a series of notebooks, each entry giving a name or nickname of a boy, with codes next to many of the entries. Some of the names were repeated multiple times, so there were fewer than 36000 boys, but the fraction of entries that were repeats was not mentioned in the articles. Some police investigators appear to have a hypothesis that the codes indicate love acts and that the notebooks were meant as a list of victims, but at this point, they really don't know - they haven't deciphered it. I should point out that it is conceivable that Schwartzmiller was part of a group of molesters who shared information about potential victims, and the notebooks were simply some kind of catalog. That would explain the large number of entries. I would hope the police are considering such hypotheses, in case Schwartzmiller is simply one member of a shadowy group - if so, the kids listed could be at risk even with Schwartzmiller in the slammer. The bottom line, however, is that (a) there was no statement as to Schwartzmiller's loveual orientation, (b) nobody other than Schwartzmiller really knows what the purpose of these notebooks is or what the codes mean, and (c) the police do not know how many children were abused, but it could be very high.
