The molester is over 60 years old and has been at it for over 30 years - his first run-in with the police occurred in the early 1970s.

I would be physically possible to commit 36000 love acts over a 30 year period - it comes out to just over 3 per day, but I can't see someone managing that number without a lot of help given that the molester would have to find suitable victims. Not getting caught way earlier is a different question, although he did have various run-ins with the authorities (which was also covered in the articles). On the other hand, this is national news, and what you read about tends to be the very unusual cases. I could see the "1 in 10,000" molester getting front page coverage, which is what this guy got.

The difficulty of pulling this off, however, is one of the reasons I suggested that his notebook might be some sort of catalog shared by a group. Nobody (other than the defendant) knows for sure what the codes next to each name actually mean.

The police, BTW, are not claiming 36,000 as a realistic number. They merely figured that if even a tiny fraction were real (say, 1 to 10 percent), it would still be outrageously high.

WBT's claims are not the claims in the press, which may not be an accurate report of the claims made by the police. The police may have speculated, but they also stated that they have not figured out what codes mean. They would very much like to have some testimony from additional victims.
