I've already mentioned part of the reason, but if you need more, then look at the fact that Louisville and Nashville are both major transportation hubs, with three major N-S, E-W interstates intersecting at Louisville, for instance, as well as Louisville being the world hub for UPS and a major hub for the U.S. Postal Service. Two nationally critical automotive bridges and two nationally critical rail bridges span the Ohio River at Louisville. Louisville has the largest lock system for barge traffic on the Ohio River, and a major international free trade zone. In addition, Louisville is the 16th largest metropolitan area in the nation. The Soviets understood the strategic importance of this region, which is why we were on their list of critical targets in the event of a nuclear war. Apparently, they knew something many Americans don't. And why would that be, Phil. I've already acknowledged the importance of New york and other localities in the Northeast. That doesn't diminish the importance of the rest of the country. Yes, New York is a bigger target, which is why so much money has been spent there. But it is also time to spend money elsewhere where people and infrastructure is also vulnerable to attack. George
