During the week of June 6th a number environmental organizations from all over the world will be asking the United Nations to implement a moratorium on industrial longline fishing in the Pacific to protect endangered sea turtles, albatross, sharks, marine mammals and fish from being injured, end and driven to extinction. If you live in or near New York City you can help! Bring along your family, neighbors, friends and colleagues to help us raise awareness about the plight of sea turtles and the ocean and deliver the thousands of pebreastions signed by citizens, scientists and organizations on Wednesday June 8th, World Ocean Day, at the UN in New York City. This will be an exciting day so I hope you can participate. We will buttemble outside the main entrance to the UN on R. Wallenberg Walk-1st Avenue between E. 44th and E. 45th on the East-UN side of the street in front of the flags at 11 AM. We are asking people to make umbrella sea turtles to join our large wall of the many amazing drawings and posters that have been sent to the UN from all over the world. After about 30 minutes we will proceed inside to meet an official to deliver the pebreastions. The educational organization Global Response In brief, there is going to be a lot of attention given to the threat of longline fishing in the Pacific to sea turtles at this meeting of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and we expect a good reception of Costa Rica and the UK?s proposal for a moratorium. Please let me know that you plan to attend and how many folks you expect will come will come with you. Help spread the word to other teachers, environmental, and youth groups etc. in the greater NYC area who may want to participate. Later that evening at 7:30 PM there will be a screening of our new film Last Journey for the Leatherback? at the SoHo Patagonia store in NYC at 101 Wooster St. which you are all welcome to attend. To spice up the event we are making leatherback sea turtles out of black umbrellas and posterboard. Here?s how you can make your own: Using black umbrellas, cut-out black painted cardboard or thick black paper leatherback sea turtle flippers, a head and tail and attach to the umbrella. Make sure to paint or draw white spots on the turtle. It is a good idea to make it so the umbrella can be closed for easy transport. To see our models go to: Don?t forget to make the legs longer and add the white spots. Also, for those of you who cannot make it, we are planning to have an exhibition of children?s artwork concerning sea turtles inside the UN sometime next year so there will be a chance for you to still contribute. If you cannot make it but can help make the turtles please let me know.
