Fidel Castro's Birthday Celebrated in New York

Havana, Aug 15 (ACN) Located in the heart of Harlem, New York, the Santa Ambrosia Episcopalian Church was the scene Monday for a celebration of Fidel Castro's 80th birthday, reported EFE.

Numerous people, mostly of Latin American origin, celebrated Fidel's birthday and wished the Cuban leader a speedy recovery from his recent intestinal surgery.

Participants warmly reminisced about Fidel Castro's two historic visits to Harlem, a neighborhood inhabited mainly by African-Americans and Hispanics.

The first was in 1960, the year following the triumph of the revolution, when he stayed at the emblematic Teresa Hotel. His second visit came in 1995, while he was in New York for the 50th anniversary of the United Nations.

The party didn't leave out the birthday cake that was decorated with 80 candles, in the white, red and blue colors of the Cuban flag, and with the message "Happy Birthday Fidel." There were also photos of Fidel and Che Guevara.

"We are celebrating Fidel's birthday and there are people present of many different religious ideologies who in one way or another admire Fidel," said Luis Miranda, director of the Casa de las Americas in New York, and one of the speakers.

A documentary on five Cuban men unfairly imprisoned in the US, known as the Five, was shown as part of the celebration. The Cuban men were arrested in 1998, while they had infiltrated Miami-based person groups in order to prevent criminal actions against Cuba.

Activist Vicente "Panama" Alba and Episcopalian Minister Luis Barrios also spoke at the event, celebrating the life of Castro. * ================================================================ NY Transfer News Collective * A Service of Blythe Systems Since 1985 - Information for the Rest of Us ================================================================
