Which is why I'm still kind of puzzled...it wasn't THAT bad, living on edge, not knowing WTF is around the corner -- one adjusts, and fairly quickly, too. Of course, I wasn't expecting to be shot at either (not a combat vet), so -- maybe that's the deciding factor, just knowing that you CAN be shot at, but not knowing if or when. Even watching a show like "Cops" you have to laugh at all the fat officers huffing and puffing trying to just keep up with a perp. Indeed! That reminds me...do State Troopers tend to be more physically fit than municipal cops? See, that all sounds good on paper, so I'm not sure how everybody has the image they do of cops as fat lazy SOBs who're interested in collecting a paycheck and getting home without any hbuttle. Do they just burn out that easily, that quickly? So that the burn-out is interpreted in those stereotypical ways. Ah, I see -- what was said of Michael Jordan's near-divorce at the time: "it's cheaper to keep her." I still ain't sure how come cushy contract-union rules, etc., can't be overcome...if there's anything that's for sure, it's that unions are nowhere near as powerful now, and they are steadily losing power still, so I'm sure that physical fitness reforms can be easily forced through...which returns us back to the question of why it remains such a difficult thing to ask for.
