By William Saletan... In most areas I know, the LEO and FF benefits and pension are either the same or very similar. All in all, the pay is quite similar. Certainly the FFs have won the PR game. They have an 'easier' sell, with fewer 'negatives'. That helps some with recruiting, and retention, and moral, maybe a very little with funding and pay. Again, see my first post dealing with supply and demand. Required time for FF to be trained is MUCH shorter. In about two months he can be filling a needed billet on a team. One major department found what seemed to me a very legal and workable plan. It offered several % "incentive pay" for any and all that would take and pbutt an annual physical. Seems like perfect win-win situation for all to me. Sadly, that money then was in total budget package up for negotiation in labor contract between union and city. Union wanted that money spread evenly to everybody, and city accepted. I prefer height and weight proportinate and fit, for purposes of health, vigor, and long life. But I should also note, that in police work there are many clear situations where BULK is an advantage. From my limited observations I can not disagree. I can not think of any fundamental reason. I am sure each dept. has it's own ways. Image? Well personally, I was interested in collecting a paycheck and I loved it when I could do my job without any 'hbuttle', (became pretty good at talking people into going along with the program), and liked going home. I did not shirk dealing with problems, but tried to emph. persuasion. I had serious concerns with LEOs who seemed eager to leave roll call to find a "hbuttle" I am not the only realist in the world. I could be wrong, but I believe govt. employee unions are getting stronger, and winning many cases. I accept all, but delete the word "easily" Has to be a priority of the people, and person they elect. Sorry, but it is not high on priorities. I am very glad to take time and help.
