The Triangle Fire, the Protocols of Peace, and Industrial Democracy in Progressive Era New York

Richard Greenwald

The search for an answer to "The Labor Question" during the Progressive Era was an effort to avoid the unrest and violence that flared so often in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. In the ladies' garment industry, a unique experiment in industrial democracy brought together labor, management, and the public. As author Richard Greenwald explains, it was an attempt to "square free market capitalism with ideals of democracy to provide a fair and just workplace." Led by Louis Brandeis, this group negotiated the "Protocols of Peace." But in the midst of this experiment, 146 mostly young, immigrant women died in the Triangle Factory Fire of 1911. As a result of the fire, a second, interrelated experiment, New York's Factory Investigating Commission (FIC)--led by Robert Wagner and Al Smith--created one of the largest reform successes of the period.

The Triangle Fire, the Protocols of Peace, and Industrial Democracy in Progressive Era New York uses these linked episodes to show the increasing interdependence of labor, industry, and the state. Greenwald explains how the Protocols and the FIC best illustrate the transformation of industrial democracy and the struggle for political and economic justice.

Richard A. Greenwald is Director of the Business, Society, & Culture Program and buttociate Professor of History at Drew University, Madison, NJ. He is co-editor of Sweatshop USA: The American Sweatshop in Historical and Global Perspective and serves on the editorial board of the journal Working USA.

A People's History of Science

Cliff Conner

In A People's History of Science, Cliff Conner demystifies science by locating its origins and development in the productive activities of working people. His thesis is that science--the knowledge of nature--did not emerge from the brains of "Great Geniuses" with "Great Ideas," but from the collective experience of working people--artisans, miners, sailors, peasant farmers, and others--whose struggle for survival forced them into close contact with nature on a daily basis. He points out that: Medical science began with knowledge of plants' therapeutic properties discovered by preliterate ancient people. Chemistry and metallurgy originated with ancient miners, smiths, and potters; geology and archaeology were also born in the mines. Mathematics owes its existence and a great deal of its development to surveyors, merchants, clerk-accountants, and mechanics of many millennia. The emergence of computer science from the garages and attics of college dropouts demonstrates that even in recent times the most important scientific innovations have not always been produced by a professional scientific elite. The mystique of modern science proclaims it to be a superior form of knowledge, but in fact its trustworthiness has been thoroughly undermined by the self-interest of corporations that hire the scientists and manipulate their research findings.

Clifford D. Conner has published a number of articles on the history of science in scholarly journals and has participated in international colloquia on various subjects. Conner worked as a proofreader and taught history in the CUNY system before becoming a full-time author of books on historical subjects.

The Culture Struggle

JEW GETS AWAY WITH liquidate 675
100-1. Remember all those votes in Palm Beach for Pat Buchanan? They couldn't understand how in a jew town he got so many votes but they always fail to understand that where there...

Michael Parenti

In his new book, Culture Struggle, Parenti shows us that culture is a changing process and the product of a dynamic interplay between a wide range of social and political interests. It is not enough to study the prevailing political realm. We also must grasp developments throughout the entire civil society. In short, to understand a society we need to understand the problem of culture as well as that of power. Drawing from cultures around the world, Parenti shows that beliefs and practices are readily subjected to political manipulation, and that many parts of culture are being commodified, separated from their group or communal origins, to be packaged and sold to those who can pay for them. Folk culture is giving way to a corporate market culture. Art, science, medicine, and psychiatry can be used as instruments of cultural control, and even marriage, the "foundation of society," has been misused by heteroloveuals across the centuries. Using vivid examples and riveting arguments throughout, The Culture Struggle ranges from the everyday to the esoteric and presents a collection of snapshots of our time.

Michael Parenti is a critically acclaimed author and public speaker. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Yale University and has taught at a number of colleges and universities, in the United States and abroad. He is the author of eighteen books, including Superpariotism, The buttbuttination of Julius Caesar, and Inventing Reality.

Mighty Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks

Discussion with Esperanza Martell

Dir. Robert Houston documentary 40 min 2002

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks sparked a revolution by sitting still. Her simple act of defiance against racial segregation on city buses inspired the African American community of Montgomery, Alabama, to unite against the segregationists who ran City Hall. Over the course of a year, the Montgomery Bus Boycott would test the endurance of the peaceful protesters, overturn an unjust law and create a legacy that continues to inspire those who work for freedom and justice today. We will open with music and images selected from The Black Panther Suite by Paul Chang and Fred Ho.
