Glad you can express it without fear. The firearms owners licensing system and gun registry system gets accessed... Workshop 1: Invisible Theater Saturday, May 20, Sunday, May 21, and Monday, May 22, 2006 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day Tuition: $450* Workshop 2: Cop-in-the-Head Tuesday, May 23, Wednesday, May 24, and Thursday, May 25 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day Tuition $450* * A very limited number of partial scholarhips will be available. However, most people who apply for one will not receive it. To be tell us why we should give a scholarship to you instead of someone else. Both workshops take place at: The Brecht Forum 451 West Street (West Side Highway) New York City ***** Invisible Theater is one of the techniques of the Theater of the Oppressed, in which "actors" create "theatrical" situations in public places, but where the public does not realize that a performance is unfolding before them. The idea is to engage people in dialogue around social issues and ultimately provoke them into taking some kind of action on the issue. Invisible Theater can be "performed" anywhere--in city streets, in restaurants, on public transportation, etc. It is a type of guerilla theater, and has been used by political activists all over the world around numerous issues big and small. Cop-in-the-Head, one of the Image Theater exercises developed by Augusto Boal, is an introspective technique used to recognize and confront internalized forms of oppression, and seeks to understand how internal oppression is related to external, societal forms of oppression. It explores power relations and collective solutions to concrete problems. The workshop begins with someone recounting a personal experience of oppression, and then gradually goes from the particular to the general. In the end the group, and not the original story-teller, has become the protagonist. Canadiangunnutzriiiiiiight, buttwipe.... then why do you want to meet in person... eh? ya stoooopid f***.... you can't offer up any coherent arguments through your keyboard, so you think you can be more impressive in... ***** Application information: The priority application deadline is Wednesday, May 3, 2006. All applications received after that date will be placed on a waiting list. Full payment is due by Wednesday, May 10. If you need to cancel your participation and do so by Friday, May 12 you will receive a full refund, minus a $50 administrative fee. If you cancel after May 12 but on or before May 18 you will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made after May 18, or if you fail to show up for all or part of the workshop. All scholarship decisions will be made after May 3. Each workshop is limited to 30 participants, and we expect that demand will be greater than the number of available places. Your application does not guarantee acceptance, but we will make a decision regarding acceptance as quickly as possible so that you can make the necessary plans for attending. We have, therefore, created a schedule of admissions priority that will partly help us determine who is accepted and who is not. The order of priority is as follows: 1. Current and past TOPLAB interns have priority over all other applicants. 2. People who have participated in TOPLAB training workshops during any of our terms between 2001 and the current 2006 term. 3. People who have attended previous TOPLAB workshops with Augusto Boal. 4. People who are actively involved with a community or consbreastuency-based organization which is concerned with issues of social justice, or who are engaged in an active way with an organization or movement fighting for progressive social change have fourth priority. Since we expect to receive many more applications than available places, we will not be able to accept people who do not have a venue in which to practice and implement the techniques that will be taught. The Theater of the Oppressed is a set of tools designed to strengthen the skills of social and political organizers; therefore, we discourage people who are not involved in movements to radically restructure society or who are merely curious about Boal and TO from applying. 5. The following will NOT be considered for acceptance into the workshops: a. People who would use the workshops and techniques learned in some business capacity or on behalf of a business or other profit-making endeavor, for example, in labor-management mediation schemes, or in employee-employer sensitivity training sessions. b. People employed as police officers or in other law enforcement capacities. c. Actors who would use the techniques primarily for the advancement of their careers. People who do not fit into categories 1, 2 or 3 above, should send a questions: Canadiangunnutz10x klunk: 10x i'm glad that i can too.... to an extent.... or i wouldn't remain... 1. Please tell us what, if any, experience you have had with Theater of the Oppressed, or with theater generally. (Note that theater experience or background is not in and of itself a sufficient criterion for acceptance. Similarly, lack of theater experience does not disqualify anyone from being accepted. Most participants in TOPLAB workshops have not had any theater or drama training.) 2. Tell us about your involvement in or work with social-change or peace and justice movements or organizations. 3. What kind of work do you do where you might be able to apply Theater of the Oppressed techniques? With what objecive? 4. Are you a member of a labor union? If so, which one? Are you a student? If so, where? Are you a teacher? 5. Tell us about any foreign travel experience, especially in underdeveloped or developing countries. 6. How did you hear about the Theater of the Oppressed and the Theater of the Oppressed Laboratory? 7. Any other comments? Note that these workshops are intended as organizer training. They are not designed to be therapeutic sessions, and the needs and desires of the group as a whole prevail over the needs of specific individuals. Similarly, they are not designed for actors who want to learn new techniques or improve their dramatic skills. Prior acting or TO experience is not a pre-requisite for admission, and most workshop participants have never had any formal theater training. ***** This is the TOPLAB Announcement List.
