The call to New York is part of the organizations 53rd Global Voyage and the ship is arriving in the United States after calls to 13 countries including Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Libya and Ireland. In New York, the participants who are of all ages and backgrounds will launch a Global Article 9 Campaign to ask the people of the United States to support the Japanese public in protecting the treasured Article 9 of their consbreastution, which renounces war and the right to maintain armed forces. Other activities include a Japanese drum performance as part of a free World Music Concert in Dag Hammarskjold Park (47th St. and 1st Ave., June 6, 4:30 7:30pm), a cultural celebration in Harlem, a briefing at the United Nations, and a program to share the daily life experiences of Arab-American communities in Brooklyn. A unique non-profit organization, Peace Boat offers educational programs onboard its three-month around the world voyages, organizing cross-cultural dialogues, interactive peace-building workshops, and humanitarian support in the ports that it visits. In other ports on this voyage, which left Japan on April 5, Peace Boat pbuttengers have visited tsunami-stricken villages in Sri Lanka to support community reconstruction, initiated a fair trade project to improve infrastructure in the largest refugee camp in the Middle East, and joined the Libyan people for a friendship festival in Tripolis Green Square. After New York, the voyage will continue to Central America, and later will participate in the World Peace Forum in Vancouver (June 23 28) before returning to Tokyo in mid-July. Peace Boat, an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations, was founded in 1983 by a group of Japanese students who wanted to meet directly with people in the Asia-Pacific who had suffered during Japans past military aggression in order to build reconciliation and peace for the future.
