whether or not it SHOULD have been done is one thing, but saying it was based on irrational fear is absurd. the threat from the soviet bloc was very real. that's why we had a cold war, and the threats from our local "useful idiots' as well as liars-rogues like Duranty at the NYT (whom has been proven a complete fraud depsite his Pulitzer) in lying about the horrors of the gulag, of stalin's liquidateous brutalityy, all these threats WERE real. and as the soviet union clearly included FORCED atheism on its citizens (and buttociated regimes), the inclusion was arguably a good counterpoint, to show "hey, we're different" it differentiated us from the "godless communists",as a nation that did NOT force any belief on anybody, but that recognized that there was a historical basis for our beliefs that our rights, for example, came from "the creator", etc. nobody is forced to believe anything, but we can recognize historical and ideological precedent as to the origin of rights during our declaration. i actually read a pretty interesting quote recently from the KGB forwarded to all soviet teachers back in the day on how to suppress any religious beliefs-ideas and to enforce atheism. whit
